Aviation Trail
Follow the Wright brothers’ stops around Elizabeth City! Wilbur Wright traveled to Elizabeth City in 1900 looking for passage to Kitty Hawk. With brother Orville, he returned to Elizabeth City on many occasions to buy supplies. The Elizabeth City First Leg of Flight Committee has commemorated those trips by placing site markers where the Wright brothers visited, bought materials, and made progress in their historic mission.

USCG ARSC
Visit the United States Coast Guard base’s Aircraft Repair & Supply Center, home of the largest command in the world. The Aircraft Repair & Supply Center is a training facility as well as the main repair depot for the Coast Guard’s helicopters and airplanes. Tour the base’s ARSC to discover the efficiency and professionalism behind the USCG.

The tour is held every Wednesday at 1:00 pm and lasts about 2 hours. Those interested in participating need to call ahead to make arrangements at least two weeks in advance.

Lighter-than-air ships have had a major impact on Elizabeth City’s history and economy. It is not uncommon to see Monster.com, Sanyo, Fuji Film, and other blimps flying high above the city as they make their way to the US Naval Blimp Hangar. Visitors wishing to tour the facility will get the opportunity to learn about the Navy’s lighter-than-air history in Elizabeth City as well as view the company’s plant.

Tours are held on Wednesdays at 3:00 pm and run 30-45 minutes. All tours need to be arranged ahead of time.

Museum of the Albemarle
The Museum of the Albemarle, a regional section of the North Carolina Museum of History, promotes the understanding of history and material culture of the Albemarle region and the state for the educational benefit of all people. Learn the story of the people who have settled in the Albemarle region—from the Native Americans to the first English-speaking colonists, adventurers, farmers, and fishermen. Programs include guided tours, "Hands on History" presentations, lectures, audiovisuals, and exhibits. While you’re there, visit the museum gift shop! Free admission.
